Acne treatment options tailored to your skin type

Some cases of acne are mild and can be effectively treated with over-the-counter options such as cleansers and spot treatments that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. However, many people experiencing moderate to severe acne may not get the results they want from these types of products, and a more tailored treatment approach is required. There are several different types of acne that can range in severity; because of this, while a specific treatment option may work well for one patient, another patient may require a completely different treatment plan. A member of our dermatology team will perform an in-depth examination of your skin and talk with you about your medical history, specifically relating to acne, as well as other important questions that may affect your treatment plan.Acne treatments designed to kill the breakout-causing bacteria generally fall into two categories: topical or oral. Topical treatments use prescription-grade ingredients to kill bacterial infections and reduce the oils produced by the skin. Oral treatments can benefit patients with red and/or swollen acne, as the medication’s systemic effects will help kill the bacteria and reduce the corresponding inflammation.
Several other therapies can work well either alone or in combination with oral or topical treatments, including:
- Steroid injections
- Chemical peels
- Professional facials
- Laser therapy
- Acne surgery
