Posted by Dr. Vikram KhannaThe basics of Xtrac treatment
Patients with mild to moderate forms of psoriasis, vitiligo, and certain types of eczema can enjoy long lasting relief with Xtrac laser therapy. The treatment uses a highly focused beam of light to treat active lesions to achieve effective, rapid clearing without injuring healthy tissue. For the treatment to be successful, multiple sessions are needed to fully clear the area. Most patients achieve results within four to ten brief sessions. Patients may have anywhere between one and three sessions per week.
What Xtrac treats
PsoriasisPsoriasis is a type of autoimmune disorder that affects nearly 7.5 million Americans. There are several types of psoriasis, including: plaque, guttate, pustular, inverse, erythrodermic, and scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis can cause inflamed, itchy, burning patches of skin that may appear as silver, white, or red scaly patches. Psoriasis is a chronic condition with no known cure, however Xtrac laser treatment can clear up symptoms and put the disease into long term remission.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a skin disorder that can cause pigmentation loss and impact appearance. Vitiligo can affect both men and women of all different skin types, although the condition is more noticeable in those with darker skin tones. Patients with vitiligo develop white patches on the skin, usually on the face, lips, arms, hands, and feet. The condition does not cause any physical pain; however, it can have a major emotional impact on a patients’ confidence and self-esteem. Xtrac works great for Vitiligo, because it can reach larger areas in much less time than other types of laser treatment. Xtrac can drastically minimize and sometimes even eliminate depigmented areas of vitiligo.
Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema and causes itchy skin that can lead to swelling, redness, and cracking. In extreme cases, patients may experience crusting, scaling, and weeping fluid from the inflamed areas. The disease is usually caused by a combination of genetics and exposure to certain allergens. Xtrac treatment is effective at reducing flare-ups of atopic dermatitis.
How Xtrac works
Xtrac is the first FDA-approved excimer laser treatment for psoriasis, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis (eczema). It is an excellent option for patients who have not seen results from creams, medications, and lifestyle, or dietary changes. The treatment itself does not hurt, however patients will feel a warm sensation during the session. Mineral oil is applied to the skin prior to beginning treatment so the laser can more effectively penetrate active lesions. During the treatment, we will place the handheld applicator on the skin and move it across the treatment area. The small head of the laser delivers UVB rays to the affected skin only. In the 12-24 hours following treatment, the skin may appear sunburned along with an itching or burning sensation. These symptoms are normal and shouldn’t be too uncomfortable.
