CoolSculpting, the nonsurgical way to slim down in Algonquin, IL

CoolSculpting Logo CoolSculpting in Algonquin at Dermatology Specialists of Illinois is a breakthrough in the treatment of localized fat. These pockets of fat are restricted to specific parts of your body and are frustratingly tough (or impossible) to treat with a sensible diet and exercise. As its name suggests, CoolSculpting uses a proprietary cooling technology to sculpt stubborn areas of fat, gently and effectively. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, CoolSculpting treatment is a non-invasive alternative to liposuction, which involves removing fat through small surgical incisions and with a specialized surgical vacuum – at substantial cost to the patient in terms of recovery time, and potential risks of complications. When administered deftly by Dr Vic Khanna and the team, CoolSculpting eliminates the downsides associated with traditional, surgical fat removal techniques.

Body contouring with CoolSculpting

Developed by medical device company Zeltiq Aesthetics, CoolSculpting treatment is based on research conducted by doctors at the Harvard University-affiliated Wellman Center for Photomedicine. Researchers observed that some children developed dimples after eating popsicles, a condition that has an apt name: popsicle panniculitis. This finding was important, because it showed that cold temperatures (in this case, ice) are capable of damaging small areas of fat cells in a selective manner – without destroying the surrounding skin and tissues. Formed in 2005, Zeltiq used these findings to develop a practical, fat-freezing technique; since then, more than five million CoolSculpting treatment cycles have been completed on patients worldwide.

How CoolSculpting works at Dermatology Specialists of Illinois.

How CoolSculpting works

CoolSculpting works on the principle of cryolipolysis. When the word is broken down, you get a much better sense as to exactly how CoolSculpting technology works:
  • Cryo = freezing
  • Lipo = fat
  • Lysis = loosening
The freezing part refers to cooling temperatures delivered to the specific areas of the body that you want to shrink. A specialized device applies therapeutic cooling, which is controlled throughout treatment by our providers. The fat part refers to the cells that are targeted precisely, and to how fat cells respond differently to the cold than other types of cells. Lysis refers to the process that occurs when CoolSculpting treatment is administered. As the treated fat cells freeze, they are crystallized, loosen up, and begin to die off. Gradually, the fat cells are eventually eliminated from the body safely, as part of a natural metabolic process.

In healthy adults, fat cells that are treated by CoolSculpting can’t form again in the same area. With other means of fat reduction, the cells grow larger when you gain weight and smaller when you lose weight. But the number of fat cells remains. So, when you stop exercising or consume more calories than you expend, the excess is stored in fat cells in the subcutaneous layer of fat underneath the skin. The pudgy pockets can develop in the same area all over again. With CoolSculpting’s ability to actually destroy fat cells, the treated area remains contoured. But fat can still develop in a generalized manner throughout the body, albeit distributed more evenly than before treatment.

Warm up to the many benefits

Millions of people are at or near their ideal weight, but they have problems with contouring localized fatty areas. That’s because these pockets of fat are often due to factors that can’t be effectively addressed with diet and exercise alone. These factors include a genetic propensity to storing excess fat in areas, such as around the middle, hips, and thighs; an increasingly sluggish metabolism with advancing years; declining estrogen levels as women enter menopause; and other hormonal changes. For instance, the stress hormone, cortisol, can contribute to an apple shape.

In addition to being an effective treatment for many different types of people, CoolSculpting can be completed without anesthesia, is well-tolerated by most patients, is quick (a true lunchtime procedure), and non-invasive. The less invasive the procedure, generally the fewer the risks of serious complications, and the speedier the healing. In CoolSculpting’s case, there is nothing to heal from, which means no downtime!

CoolSculpting, by the numbers:
  • 35 minutes to around an hour – the amount of time each treatment session requires, depending on the size of the area to be treated as well as the number of areas to be treated
  • 20 to 25 percent -- the amount of fat loss, on average, after a single treatment (applied to one area)
  • 21 to 90 days – in around three weeks to three months, you see continuously improved results as fat cells are crystallized, destroyed, and eliminated from the body
  • Six months – the amount of time, post-treatment, that the average patient requires to see optimal results

The procedure

If you are an ideal candidate for CoolSculpting (and most people are!), treatment involves our talented providers using a specialized applicator to isolate and draw in fat in the trouble area. Applicators are precisely shaped and designed to deliver cooling uniformly across the targeted sites. As the applicator delivers powerful cooling, patients often describe a tugging sensation followed by intense cold; however, this passes quickly and is tolerated very well by most patients. Since your provider can monitor and control cooling throughout treatment, the process gets predictably safe results that further optimize the device’s ability to freeze fat. In fact, many patients kick back and read, take a catnap, or catch up on emails during the procedure. Resulting redness, bruising, and tenderness is also so fleeting that you can get back to work, the gym, and other activities with no downtime.

Why CoolSculpting may be for you

Since CoolSculpting is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle nor is it a weight loss program, appropriate patients should be generally healthy and within 30 pounds of their ideal weight. If you have stubborn bulges in some of the areas mentioned above, you may be a great candidate for CoolSculpting. You should also be prepared to continue to maintain your healthy eating and fitness habits post-treatment. For many patients, that’s not a problem -- they get such a big boost from CoolSculpting, that they’re motivated to maintain that sculpted physique!

CoolSculpting is a revolutionary way to eliminate stubborn fat from the chin, jawline and body by applying cold temperatures in a controlled manner. This nonsurgical technique “freezes” and destroys fat cells, which are gradually removed from the body. As this process occurs, you see increasingly slimmer and toned contours.
Your doctor uses a special applicator to deliver cooling to targeted treatment areas. Since CoolSculpting is so precise, surrounding tissues are not affected. Fat cells in the treated areas are damaged and naturally eliminated. Once treated fat is removed, it can’t be deposited again in the same spot.
CoolSculpting was first cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2010. It is based off of the well-established science of cryolipolysis (“fat freezing”), which was advanced by Harvard University-affiliated researchers in the mid-2000s. Since then, more than 5 million treatment cycles have been successfully completed on patients worldwide.
Most any part of the body can be effectively and safely treated, including the upper arms, back (under the bra), flanks, abdomen, thighs, hips, backside, and calves and ankles. CoolSculpting has also evolved to effectively clear fat from the chin and jawline, adding definition to a flabby face.
It’s possible to get the results you seek in a single treatment! Since every patient is different, your doctor will visit with you to determine the best treatment plan for your situation. During a follow-up visit, another session may be recommended to get the optimal results that you desire.
The amount of time required to complete each CoolSculpting treatment depends on both the size of the area to be treated, as well as the number of areas to be treated. Depending on your needs, treatment can be completed in an hour – a “lunchtime” procedure!
Patients generally describe a “tugging” sensation followed by intense cold. These sensations are short-lived; the applicator precisely isolates the treatment zone and delivers controlled cooling. This process is well-tolerated and doesn’t require anesthetic. Many patients sit back and relax during treatment, enjoying a good book or even a cat nap!
Yes! Since CoolSculpting isn’t an invasive procedure, you have nothing to recover from and that means no downtime. This compares favorably to conventional surgical techniques for fat reduction, such as liposuction, which requires time for both preparation and recovery, and puts greater demands on your body for healing.
Treated fat cells are selectively damaged and, as those fats are released from targeted cells, they are processed by the liver. The fat cells that are killed as a result, are broken down and digested by your body’s immune cells – a completely natural and safe metabolic process.
The manufacturers of CoolSculpting, Zeltiq Aesthetics, report patients on average shed 20% to 25% of fat cells in the treatment area after one session. Since fat loss is a gradual process, slimming continues to improve over the next three weeks to three months, with optimal results in around six months.
Traditionally, localized fat was suctioned off of the body via liposuction. A surgical procedure, lipo requires anesthesia and is not without its risks. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment, suitable for all skin types and many patients close to or within their ideal weight range. It is not a weight loss procedure.
CoolSculpting is non-invasive. Not unlike other advanced, non-surgical techniques, CoolSculpting can produce temporary redness, tingling, sensitivity, bruising, and discomfort. It is not associated with permanent nerve damage, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, or other skin problems and side effects that patients may have heard about with other aesthetic devices and treatments.
