Miradry Video by Mallory Jones
Hi, I am Mallory. I'm one of the PAs at Dermatology Specialists of Illinois and one of the providers that does our miraDry treatments at the Algonquin location. miraDry is an FDA approved procedure for hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating of the underarms. It is a pretty quick in-office procedure. It takes about an hour and a half. There is numbing, so it's pretty comfortable. The downtime is really minimal. We do ask patients not to work out for a week afterwards, but otherwise you can get right back to daily activities. The sweating stops immediately, which is awesome. We see on average an 82% reduction in not sweating. We do also see an improvement in odor and a slight reduction in hair, which can be an added benefit as well. We do it in several of our locations, so if you have any questions, give us a call. Otherwise, we'd love to see you for the procedure.
About the miraDry system

About the miraDry system

If you suffer from hyperhidrosis, an average day probably includes:
  • Excessive armpit sweating
  • Strong perspiration odor
  • Sweat-stained clothes
  • Changing your shirt often
  • Social anxiety and avoiding public situations
If you are in the Algonquin area, you now have access to a permanent solution. miraDry is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared hyperhidrosis treatment. It addresses what causes excessive sweating, rather than attempting to lessen sweat volume with chemical-laden antiperspirants or masking odor with heavily-perfumed deodorant. miraDry dramatically reduces wetness and odor, usually with just one treatment session. You feel dry and fresh, naturally.

In Woodstock, IL, Brent is wrapping up his slide show for a very important presentation, but right when he's about to get in front of a board room full of professionals he finds he's sweating profusely and cannot disguise the wetness under his arms. On the other side of town in Algonquin, IL, Sarah is struggling with choosing a dress for her date tonight. She wants the light-colored one, but she deals with sweating so bad that she is unable to do so because she'll end up ruining her dress, even with antiperspirant. Instead of the dress she really wants, she has to get yet another little black dress. Both Brent and Sarah likely deal with the condition known as Hyper Hidrosis, a type of excessive sweating that is difficult to control with regular over-the-counter products, such as antiperspirants. This condition is more than just annoying. It can impact their social and work lives as well as their clothes. Brent and Sarah would benefit from learning about a procedure available at dermatology specialists of Illinois, known as Mira dry. About the miraDry procedure

On the day of treatment, your underarms are numbed with injections of local anesthetic. This ensures comfort while the device is operated at the highest energy levels for effective treatment. Computer-controlled microwave energy is delivered to deep tissue layers where it targets moisture in sweat glands. Skin is kept safe and comfortable with an automated cooling feature. The process takes about 20 minutes per side, and you can return to work or other activities afterward.

Common questions about miraDry

If excessive underarm sweat and odor has impacted your life, from a social or career perspective, miraDry can be life-changing. Most reasonably healthy people are good candidates, and there is low risk of side effects. You may never have to carry an extra shirt, skip a workout because the gym is crowded, or panic at the podium again. You probably won’t need antiperspirant or deodorant, either.

Even if you do not have hyperhidrosis, you may want to consider miraDry to simply stay cool, dry, and fresh.
No. The procedure is noninvasive, and the treatment area is thoroughly numbed to ensure your comfort. Most patients tolerate it well.
There is essentially no downtime. You may return to normal activities following treatment. Some patients have mild swelling, bruising, tenderness, or tingling. However, it is temporary, and easily managed with over-the-counter analgesics and ice packs.
Probably just one. Most patients experience the results they desire . . . immediately . . . with just one miraDry session. However, treatment can be repeated if necessary.
Your body does not generate new sweat and odor glands. Once they are treated (and thus destroyed), improvement is permanent.
Not likely. miraDry addresses the source of odor as well as wetness. In fact, it is FDA-cleared for this purpose.
Yes. Treatment is also cleared by the FDA for reduction in underarm hair. miraDry is effective on all hair colors (even light shades that are difficult to treat with laser therapy). You can expect a reduction of about 70 percent in hair growth after one miraDry session.
No. While your body needs sweat glands for temperature regulation, you have several million of them. Only about two percent are in the armpits and there is no impact to other sweat glands from miraDry treatment, so it does not impair the body’s cooling function.
Botox injections can reduce symptoms of hyperhidrosis. However, improvement is temporary, so periodic retreatment is necessary to maintain results.
